beer for funk
gig for free drinks @ csiga with tomanek

This's been a time to play for free beers for the public. Leroy Hutson, the Ghana funkers, Eddie Jefferson, and all the other names known from the evening radio show made this unexpected oppurtunity into a soft sitting party. Ehmm.. Yeah. There's been that drunk guy who was dancing to George Benson.

Playing with the music, playing the music, I like to play. And if you play, you allways need your buddies. It's like that.

JM.004 *****
jazzman records
a. Dee Felice Trio - Nightingale
b. Los Brasilios - Brasilian Beat

Long known on the jazz dance scene as one of the premier jazz dance classics of all time, 'Nightingale' by the Dee Felice Trio was only released on the B-side of an obscure 7" on the small Terry label in the '60s. The desirability and rarity of the original record has recently seen it change hands for up to Ł400! The trio have not been around for some time now, but we at Jazzman Records have acquired an exclusive license to reissue the track legally for the first time! Perfect for jazz dancing, it's an uptempo drum, bass and piano instrumental with a catchy melody and irresistable foot-tapping latin swing to it! We've also added a bonus B-side too, with Los Brasilios providing a groovy scat femme vocal over some wicked Brasilian beats & rhythms! This is the fourth single release in our innovative 7" reissue series.

This one for mr Nzanga.

JM.005 *****

a. Letta Mbulu - What is Wrong with Groovin'
b. Lorez Alexandria - Send in the Clowns

Our previous four 45s have been met with worldwide acclaim and this record has all the hallmarks and potential of being just as successful! The original US 7" issue of Letta Mbulu 'What is Wrong with Groovin' and the Japanese LP from Lorez Alexandria featuring 'Send in the Clowns' have seen collectors and DJs around the world throwing their wallets at dealers in attempts to get hold of the originals, but due to rarity and demand few people been lucky enough to see them, let alone own them! So here they are presented for the first time on a double sided 7" for all to hear! Side one features Letta Mbulu and this catchy tune sways beautifully between jazz and soul. A rounded bass peppered with some cheeky bossa licks and thoughtful piano touches add to the jazzy flavour, but it's the soulful vocals that are the icing on the cake. Lorez Alexandria's dreamy vocals compliment a quirky horn-led jazz combo in a stunning off-beat uptempo groove on the other side. Another highly-regarded tune from the genius that is Lorez Alexandria backed with flawless musicianship that few others can rival.

This one for mr Spityu Zu.

JM.028 *****
jazzman records
a. Mark Murphy - Why Dont You Do Right
b. Eddie Jefferson - Psychedelic sally

Amongst his 40 or so albums, Murphy also recorded a little-known 45 for Riverside Records in 1962. ‘Why Don’t You Do Right’ is one of those jazz standards that sounds great anytime, and the finger popping rhythms combine with the backing vocals to swing serenely under Murphy’s expert guidance. Liza Minelli said 'There's a party goin' on in Mark's head - and I want to go to it!' If you’re the DJ, make sure this 45 is in your box! Eddie Jefferson was the creator of "Vocalese" and was also one of the great Be-Bop singers. Before he died in 1979 Jefferson remembered the early ‘50s, ‘King Pleasure heard me in Cincinnati when I was working at a place called the Cotton Club with Jack McDuff.’ He enjoyed a longer career than that of Murphy, and was no less hip! His vocals on this version of Horace Silver’s ‘Psychedelic Sally’ have enthused hipsters, listeners and jazz dancers for over 30 years now. It’s on the flipside but could easily be on the A side. Why don’t you do right – sort one out for your DJ box today!

This one for myself.

bad news from camden

Jazzman Records is closed - reports my friend djMenö from Camden. After 12 years it is over. I think I've been one of the last real (face2face) costumers and it's a real honour. But JazzmanRecords is still rolling the website, so go on, visit the link and buy some real hot funky stuff.

Slippedy Slide
Sunset Baby

"Finger Lickin' good you can groove, move, shake that booty, jump up and down like a dog on heat, Its a monster slab of vinly." (stu ibb @ tunes.co.uk) This boy's right. After a half year I had to figure out that this is the party track of the year played in the summer by names like Pedro and Dzihan&Kamien. This is probably the funkiest vinyl I've got (alright, i don't have many but I've got some). This track's a crossover between funk, disco, house and breakbeat and I think this's my fave lickin record. Bought in Berwick street, of course. (The phone rings now spityu's there and he's listening to this track... é'd say this is "megadurva")

Sunday evening party on Tilos

Vargaferenc invited me to warm up and calm down before his show Roadmovie on Tilos. I couldn't miss this unexpeted oppurtunity. We wanted to play tinkling tunes back to back but I wasn't ready for this, so iZborn rocked the house again with his fave breaky tunes. I really liked this time playing my selfmade bootlegs so I hope that you'll enjoy the same way as I did. The tracklist goes like this:

Groove Armada: Superstylin (GA diskothek remix) (Jive)
Yazz: Bad House Music (Polygram)
Pet Shop Boys: Alright (EMI)
Slide: Slippedy Slide (Fingerlickin) vs Michael Jackson: Wanna be startin something'
Plump Djs: When the Funk Hits the Fan (Fingerlickin)
Stereo 8: Groove Diggin (Fingerlickin) vs Busta Rhymes: Whoo-ha
Mr Reds vs. DJ Skribble - Everybody Come On/Can U Feel It (Stanton Warriors Remix) (FFRR)
The Capoeira Twins: Messin Around (Tru Thoughts)
Soul of Man: Outback(Fingerlickin) vs Beyonce: Crazy in Love
Underworld: Cowgirl (Breakbeat Remix) (White Label)
Unknown: Born Sloppy (White Label) vs Freeland: We want your soul
Freeland: We want your soul (Infusion Remix) (Marine Parade)
Kelis: Young Fresh and New (Timo Maas Remix) (Virgin)
ILS: No Soul (PMT Remix) (Acetate)
Amon Tobin: Verbal (Boom Bip remix)(Ninja Tune)

BIG XMAS EGO SHOPPING
We did one of the world's most dangerous things, gone with the spare money to the flea market and to a record shop. Don't do it at home, kids, cos i'm a professional. I bought these records for 3000 HUF (11 Euro). In the first phase we visited the flea market at Pecsa. It's like Camden in London, only smaller and isn't so extreme... I'd say in an other way extreme: I bought 3 CDs for 1000 HUF from a right extremist party supporter. Then we left the market and went to Underground Records, a bigger house record store in Budapest. I just wanted to buy some tickets for tonights party, but I couldn't resist to check the sales and I found treasures.

Groove Armada - Superstylin' ***
Jive, august 2001

1. Superstylin' (G.A. 7 Edit)
2. Superstylin' (G.A. Diskotek Mix)
3. Running In (Dub Mix)

A musthave piece. It's one of the biggest electronic hits ever made, everybody loves it, so. The Diskothek Mix isn't so well known, you can play it, without having a bad feeling that you play retro.

Groove Armada - My Friend ****
Jive, november 2001

1. My Friend (Radio Edit )
2. My Friend (Dorfmeister Vs Madrid De Los Austrias Dub )
3. My Friend (Swag's Good Buddy Remix)

A musthave piece nr2, sweet memories about my friends. And the remixes are just huge. Really a good-buy record. The only thing is wrong with this CD, that you can't play it on your PC, so I can't upload it to my musicphone.

Roots Manuva - Dreamy Days ***
Jive, november 2001

1 Dreamy Days (Radio Edit)
2 Dreamy Days (Vocal Mix by MJ Cole)
3 Dreamy Days (Remix by Super Furry Animals)

Dj Shadow feat Roots Manuva: GDMFSOF we love this track, alright? MJ Cole the master of garage and the broken Furry Animals made middleclass remixes, but i think for 1 Euro you wouldn't mind it anyway

Capoeira Twins -Messin' Around *****
tru thoughts, november 2002

Messin’ Around
Messin’ Around (Quantic Remix)

A vinyl for 4 euros. Tru Thoughts name's a guarantee for lovely dance tunes and Quantic's remix's just the cherry on the pie. "I love Capoeira twins always happy, danceable, good rhythms …wicked!" DJ Spider , La Marquise, France. Agree.

Unknown - Born Sloppy ***
white label, ??? 2003

Born Sloppy

This tune is a retouch of Underworld's Born Slippy and Electronauts Bumper (Plump DJs remix). The first time I heard I thought what a nice try in the studio, this DJ is mixing 2 records together, then I had to find out that this is another white label bootleg. I was a bit disappointed, it isn't that good joke to put it on vinyl, you can make it self at home too. But I had to buy this too, cos this vinyl lied on the counter like a failure. Yepp, a 5mm piece of this LP's edge is broken, I can't play this record from the beginning, 6 seconds are missing. But what did Spityu Zusay? Only the freshmen are playing the record from the beginning.

Long live this little girl! How could be a set so emotionfull, so hard, so girly? I'm just amazed by these beats and the songs like the Timo Maas version of Don't make me come to Vegas by Tori Amos, Born Slippy vs Bumper and all the other tracks. The only thing I want is an all-night girl-power breakbeat session made by Ludmilla, Miss Bliss and Nóri, my new fave female dj.

dmc, the hungarian hip hop event, just constrained - what else could i say. small guys in hip-hop uniform behaving as seen on mtv, dj research jumping near by us.. no silly dance, no feeling, just crying, cos de la soul asked us. no choice: you have to cry your soul out otherwise they gonna start the song over again. i really would have like what they made except this tiny little thing: the absence of the humble of a performer. yepp. you are paid, so do the show, please. and do not start the song over again.

that's what happens to your record if you keep the tracks just for yourself, and you woudn't like to release it. all the tracks are heard, well-known, nothing new. i've got some of the tracks (7, 14) on pre-released vinyl from 2000, some of them i know from mixes made by krafty kuts, so i really miss the feeling, that i get something new, almost out of date. these are nice hip-hop influenced party tracks, if you don't know krafty kuts. but i'm really disappointed, this record is just a bluff.
perfect compilation for this autum day

saturday noon's the drumandbass heaven for the small guys in deep. the school is over, you can give out your pocket money for the dnb promo's and partytickets. how i hate this kind of crowd in a record shop! i had to prove my good taste of music, so i snapped this record full of nice afro-latin tracks. they say this record converts jazz, Afro, Caribbean and Brazilian rhythms into dancefloor destroyers. Awesome live players get the treatment from a cross-section of ace studio bods, resulting in a wicked selection that'll heat up your hi-fi and rock the party in equal measures. Marvellous gear. i say i'd like to have it.

cheap trick. get yourself many versions of a well-known songs, and if it's possible, than turn it bossa. or jazz. or funk. i agree, this is a great compilation, but at the end i had headache its still the same song and still the same jazzy interpretation, no hard rock, no disco, no bonnie m. and this gets boring.

lady miss kier

i'm just amazed by this lady. if you haven't got her name for the first sight, well, she's been the girl with the crazy retro dress in dee lite. (for beginners: dee lite - groove is in the heart, 1989) now, she's doing dj, same as boy george does, sometimes she writes tracks for krust and die, sometimes she works together with bootsy... but do you know what's really shocks me? listen her tracks from 1997. this lady's thinking 5 years forward.

skorpio - 1973-1993 ***
HCD 37689 hungaroton, 1993

1 Szevasz haver
2 A rohanás
12 A vén koldus
13 A folyóparton ülve
14 Ne félj
15 Azt beszéli már az egész város

how i was praying the whole time not to meet any friend on the way back home from that dusty damp music store holding this cd in my hands. skorpio's an old hungarian rock band, music for the daddies. but why i wanted this stuff? just becouse the first track, szevasz haver. it has to be retouched, but there's the spirit in, that moves you, the percussions, the bass, the hammond. the rest of the cd's just average rock from the 70's with some enjoyable tracks. this cd contains the song, i hate of all songs, ever been written in hungarian music history: dédapám

here's what i missed of choc electric: the funky feeling and the rhythm that start you move. more than just an average, good quality downtempo. and don't forget to mention: spityu zu has the track ego riot in the original version. (Manu Dibango: Ca va chouia) and here you get somebody else's meaning.

first advice: set the following playlist to eliminate yoko her terrible tracks: 1,3,5,7,8,10,12.

one of the first albums i ever ever heard and i remember. we had it on tape, and as we were listening to that old BASF it was like a feast. that's what you call music with the mother milk, i was just three or like this. the second time i re-descovered this album was in 1995. and still, over and over time and time again i have to listen to this record. becouse of the pure harmony of love between john and yoko.

now i am watching the weels go round and round and round.

esmerine - if only a sweet surrender to the nights to come be true ***
Resonant, 200?

1.Red fire farm
2.There were no footprints in the dust behind them...
3.Nohna's Lullaby
4.Where there is no love there is no justice
5.Tungsten
6.Sweet surrender be true
7.Luna park
8.The marvellous engines

this one will be good, i feel. this one's going to erase all my silly thoughts, all my stress i had. it reminds me tin-tin-quartett, recalling the days i started my studies the days i was expecting i was hoping i was waiting.

Esmerine is Bruce Cawdron playing various percussive instruments and Becky Foon on cello. They are also joined by several guest musicians playing violin, harmonium and bass. On this disc they have created very emotive neo-classical melodies focussing on cello and percussion without the emphasis on guitars.
