rhoda scott & kenny clarke - jazz in paris
sunny side, 2001
recorded in Paris in may 1977

1. Bitter Street
2. Satin Doll
3. It's Impossible
4. Speak Low
5. Now's the Time
6. Out of Nowhere
7. What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life
8. Toe Jam
9. On Green Dolphin Street

jazz is the musical way to get to know your inside without hurting yourself.

jazz is celebrating life, the diversity, the absurdity and nonsense, the magnificence and the meaning, the sensuality and the depth of being human. it deals with it. jazz is the greatest individualism. you're standing on the stage, and you say: "that's the way i do things".

jazz is like sitting at the table together with your best friends, after the macaroni, with those funny eyes, imitating rhoda scott playing hammond, barefoot singing "newseee oul a foooobe'".

it's all that jazz. thats what i need.

mca 1960

i can't get this song out of my head. you know the feeling: a music starts to hit your head from behind, first just a part of the song, (in this case those chromatic violins) then you can't get through the feeling, that you have to hear the song imediatly. well it happened to me today too. after this whole day having the sound of the violins in my head i can only say, this is one of the best love songs ever.

funny mexican brass music from the 60's. it's written that you should play the record on 33, but if you do it on 45, you'll hear the funniest dnb ever for 3 euros.

hiphopjazzfunkwhatever, that't the way i like it. scruff, aim, r+c in one double album, for 8 euros... i agree not all of the tracks are 100% but there's no problem with it. a very-very nice compilation, well done. recommended if you like downtempo.

5 CD's for less then 10 Euros, that means quantity. Well, I'm not that reagge-freak, I can't take jamaican music more than a half hour, but I think everybody must have some records like these. Average reagge-jamaican-afro-latin-calypso music, so if you're in the mood, these cheap ones are useful. Otherwise... what's this crap music???

- fruit of freedom (75 min of the finest african and latin music feat busi mhlongo, orchestra baobab, bellamou messaoud, ousmane kouyate, oumou sangrae
- the heptones: pressure (pure pure overdose reagge from jamaica)
- dennis brown: bless me jah (take a look at the cover... isn't beautiful? and! incl hits like blackmagicwoman and everybodystalkingatme)
- ken boothe: a man and his hits (He's one of reagges most enduring hitmakers)
- raw kaiso2: trinidad rio and brigo (live in concert in port of spain, trinidad, incl. book translating the english lyrics to english)

Electronic robot mixer, come into my kitchen. "Whats's this post-kraftwerk feeling? Tell, me!" - get the question from nskmbm jr. yeah, this is pure electro, hc bit-music, house break and ambient at the same time. "Fantomes will hount your spirit for a long time" -it's probably not right, but well a nice electro record. I have to be used to this one.

acapella

Zeee-toda-ooo-toda-emm-toda-bee-toda-aaaay-toda-eeee. I'm talking zombie.

Deffinitly the summertune of the year. as kesyer was playng this tune in february, i said whats this funny afrocrap? tipical story. every time you hear you're going to feel yourself funnier, older, wiser, start to move, just like mj does in thriller, but with a everlasting smile on ya face. Fela Kuti knew whatstheflash. Let's start the selfesteam! (Gotta buy this...)

koop - the dnb remixes *
jcr, 2002

summer sun
tonight

why people think that every music can be mixed as a dnb track? koop can't. why? i'll explain... it's quite impossible to speed up the lovely downtempo wonders of koop. i mean, its possible, but then you feel how the dj was holding the PAUSE button during the making of the remix. it's no good.
wicked lester - the amigos ep ****
jalapeno, 2002

Amigos
Chocolate
Skeewiff`s Batucada With Lemon
Skeewiff`s Batucada With Salt

"Delicious Mexican flavours combined with fat breaks and irresistible bass lines on this four track pack from the irrepressible Jalapeno label. Can't fail to bring a smile to your face" It's quite right. There's the fat bassline, then the mexican horns, a lot of drums and you get this funny party tune. Actually I bought this one, couse dj nzanga sese kulu m'bira mobutu junior formally known as dopamin before known as dj broaf ... ehm... a small dj friend of mine's got more of these latin tunes. In case of playing b2b together with'm, now i've got something to play too.
streamer - call of the wind ep ****
kidnap records, 2003

a call of the wind
b1 head over heels
b2 under a spell

I don't know much about this dutch label, but the music this streamer makes it's really alright. call of the wind's a funky 4/4 beat, with some jungle noise, but the main attraction is the head over heels. breakz breaks and funny in the same time. i had to buy this too. i don't mind.

bundubag flag *****
fh034, 2003

flag
(...and some other tune...)

a typical almost bought record. great dancehall/dub (???dermothelpme) track, so called almost drum and bass :) with the funny female (raggamuff :)) voice, you can't stand to start the dance. i left the record there cos i was planning to go to this years extra-expensive jazz turbulence, and i was reaally tired came back from VOLT, and all my thoughts were somewhere else. this pic isn't the cover, it's just a bundubag
VOLT reports

kispál és a borz live (zero*):
boring, boring, boring, boring...

kosheen live ****
they know what it means to play at festivals. fast songs, drum and bass and hard rock in one, a witch on the stage, pierced dog-collars, great gig

yonderboi live set *****
started with the same old hip-hop beats, followed by some "funnybreak, bunnyfreak" tunes like ericsumo's mix of amorf ördögök, moloko, and some other 80's stuff (i did once klf 3 AM eternal, now he did it as well.. i was thinkin... he-he-he, mine's been earlier... well, jerkwater) and then some f*n great breaks. this boy can. this is high quality hungarian product. KÁF.

dzihan and kamien live set ****
my icons. the only problem was the had to play 3 hours, so they played their cheap-trick gig. maybe they thought 'aaaight, this's just a small town in hungary where we will play, so the classic cuts will be enough' so they played the SAME TRACKS IN THE SAME ORDER as they did in 2001 and 2002. (download here: 2001 part one 2001 part two 2002 part one 2002 part two) i was standing there like give me your BLÖKSHARDT, i can do it too. (o.k, not, but, well, so... ehmm..) during the 3 hours set they played only 10 new tracks. Nope, not some new D&K, but average tunes, i didn't know that they've got (like malente-we came to party, slide-slipperly slide, war-galaxy2000) Somebody should give them a record-token to buy some new plates. Not all the mixes were professional, but at the end, they seemed to be more easier, when they were playing their favorite jazztracks from the 70's. vlado was dancing in the background with his happy smile, and mario was doing his hocus-pocus: 'a sprinkle of the high's a smack of the low's, now it can be crossfaded'.

Work it! Got something to do but nothing to listen to in the background? This is it. It's Swing, jazz, afrobeat and house in one, Django Reinhardt goes to a Tommyboy party, with some easy listening tunes. Nice one, nothing special, very similar to Rudolf Steiner. (I probably would play Low And Sweet sometime. I know that Crska'll go mad. )

I'm listening now to mixes made by tmnk, bdi, dpmin, and other friends. nice easy tunes in the background.

meaning of a dnb fan
... It's probably not what you'd expect,... the album incorporates Motown, R&B, Hip-Hop, Northern Soul, Jazz, Funk as well as D&B. The concept is superb - an album of all different musical genres but with a unified sound throughout; and they nearly pulled it off to a tee. Tracks like the Lauryn Hill like 'Fallin'; the Bullit-esque funk flavour of 'Off Key', or the soulful spoken word style of 'Music Is M' are all beautifully executed, as is 80% of the album. However I would suggest there are a few tracks here that are a bit cynically aimed at the charts, and stray towards a more commercial, slightly cheesier vibe. You can't be too critical with albums like these as it takes a lot of bottle to do something different; and this is a groundbreaking, genre-bending album that smacks of genuine talent. The production is excellent throughout, and Jenna G's vocal ability is absolutely unquestionable.

This is a must have album for any broadminded music lover, although its eminently missable if you only like drum & bass.

I do agree. Thatswhy I cry
Album of the year.
